Ethereum (ETH) and Monero (XMR) pursue fundamentally different goals. Ethereum, launched in 2015, is a programmable global platform: developers deploy smart contracts and decentralized applications spanning DeFi, NFTs, and gaming, all recorded on a transparent public ledger. Monero, launched in 2014, is dedicated private money — a currency where ring signatures and stealth addresses obscure senders, receivers, and amounts by default.
Their consensus models diverge. Ethereum secures its network through Proof of Stake, with ETH holders staking to validate blocks. Monero remains Proof of Work, using the RandomX algorithm specifically designed to favor ordinary CPUs and resist specialized ASIC hardware, keeping mining decentralized among general-purpose machines.
Neither asset has a hard supply cap, but the mechanics differ: ETH's supply of roughly 120.7 million is governed by protocol staking issuance, while Monero's 18.8 million coins grow through a small perpetual tail emission that funds ongoing mining incentives.
Ecosystem roles barely overlap. ETH is infrastructure fuel — it pays gas for every transaction on a platform hosting many billions of dollars in application value, making it central to on-chain finance. XMR is used as confidential cash for peer-to-peer payments; its privacy guarantees serve a specific user base but have also led some exchanges to restrict listings. One chain maximizes transparency and programmability; the other maximizes transaction confidentiality, and each optimizes away what the other prizes.
