XRP and Monero pursue opposite visions of digital money. XRP powers the XRP Ledger, a Layer 1 blockchain built for fast, transparent global payments — settlement in three to five seconds, aimed at financial institutions that need a bridge asset between fiat currencies. Monero, launched in April 2014, is a privacy coin: transactions are confidential by default, using ring signatures and stealth addresses to hide senders, receivers, and amounts.
Their consensus and supply mechanics share nothing. The XRP Ledger uses a federated consensus protocol with no mining; the full 100 billion XRP supply was created at launch, with about 62.5 billion circulating and a hard cap in place. Monero uses Proof of Work with RandomX, an algorithm designed to favor ordinary CPUs and resist specialized hardware; about 18.8 million XMR circulate, and instead of a cap, a small perpetual tail emission continues rewarding miners indefinitely.
Transparency defines the divide. The XRP Ledger's public, auditable transaction record suits institutional settlement and regulatory engagement. Monero deliberately obscures transaction data to preserve fungibility and user privacy, with no corporate steward or institutional sales pitch.
Ecosystem roles follow: XRP is positioned within regulated cross-border finance, helping institutions reduce liquidity costs, while XMR circulates among users who prioritize confidential peer-to-peer payments.
