How they differ

These two are built for different audiences. Binance, founded in 2017, is a global platform with roughly 600 listed assets, card funding and a peer-to-peer marketplace. Bitvavo, founded in 2018 and based on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam, is a European platform with about 300 listed assets and euro-centric funding rails. If you are outside the EEA, Bitvavo is not an option; if you want the widest token list, Bitvavo is the narrower of the two.

Fee structures reflect that split. Binance's base spot tier is 0.1% maker and taker, reduced by 25% to 0.075%/0.075% when paying fees in BNB, with VIP tiers above. Bitvavo's base tier for euro markets is 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker, with USDC markets at 0.05%/0.05% and stablecoin pairs at 0.10%/0.10%. Bitvavo also prices deposits explicitly: SEPA transfers, iDEAL, Wero, Apple Pay and Bancontact at 0%, credit card at 1.00%, EPS and Giropay at 1.75%, PayPal at 2.00%.

Both require identity verification. Bitvavo asks for a government-issued ID plus a short video under European anti-money-laundering rules and serves all EU member states plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein under its MiCA licence, with no notable exclusions recorded. Binance is closed to US residents on Binance.com, has not accepted new UK sign-ups since October 2023, and bars Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba and the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

On regulation and history, Bitvavo holds a MiCA licence granted by the Dutch AFM on 27 June 2025 covering custody, trading platform operation and crypto transfers, superseding its earlier DNB registration, and its profile records no security incidents. Binance holds Dubai VARA and ADGM FSRA permissions and lost about $40.7M from a hot wallet in 2019, covered from its SAFU fund.
