ApeCoin

ApeCoin is the token associated with the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem and its wider community. It was launched in March 2022 and distributed through an airdrop to holders of Bored Ape and Mutant Ape NFTs, alongside allocations to the project's contributors and treasury. The token is now the native gas asset of ApeChain.

How ApeCoin works

APE is an ERC-20 token that also serves as the gas token of ApeChain, a network built for the ecosystem's applications and games. It is available across several networks including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Solana, and others listed in its categorisation. Its stated purpose is to serve as the currency and coordination asset for the ecosystem's digital and physical community activity, spanning games, creator projects, and events.

Governance has been handled through the ApeCoin DAO, where holders vote on proposals covering ecosystem funding and direction. The token has a maximum supply of 1 billion, and the entire supply is issued and in circulation, meaning the multi-year unlock schedule that followed the initial distribution has completed.

Role in the ecosystem

ApeCoin's origin ties it closely to one of the most prominent NFT collections, and its history illustrates both the reach and the difficulty of building a token economy around a cultural brand. The ecosystem has funded games and creative projects through its DAO and has periodically restructured how that funding is governed. As with other community tokens, the relationship between the token and the underlying brand's commercial activity is indirect, which is an important distinction for anyone assessing it.
