About Cosmos Hub
Cosmos Hub is the first blockchain in the Cosmos network, an ecosystem built on the idea that many independent chains should be able to communicate rather than everything running on one chain. ATOM is its native token.
Each chain in the network, historically called a zone, runs its own validator set and makes its own rules, using Tendermint or its successor CometBFT for Byzantine fault tolerant consensus. Some chains act as hubs that route traffic for others. The Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, developed within this ecosystem, lets these chains transfer tokens and messages to each other without a trusted intermediary, and it has been adopted well beyond Cosmos itself.
Consensus and ATOM's role
Cosmos Hub uses delegated proof of stake. Validators produce blocks and token holders delegate ATOM to them, sharing rewards and the risk of slashing if a validator misbehaves. ATOM has three stated functions: paying fees as a spam prevention mechanism, staking to secure the chain, and voting in governance.
The Cosmos SDK, the framework used to build these chains, has become one of the most widely used toolkits in the industry. Many well-known networks were built with it, which means the Cosmos technology stack has far wider reach than the Cosmos Hub chain itself.
Supply
ATOM has no fixed maximum supply. Issuance is inflationary and adjusts based on the proportion of tokens staked, rising when the staked share is low to encourage more staking and falling when it is high. Total supply currently sits at roughly 525 million, nearly all circulating.
A recurring debate in the ecosystem concerns value accrual: because the SDK is open and chains are sovereign, much of the activity built on Cosmos technology does not directly benefit ATOM holders. Governance has explored several proposals aimed at strengthening the hub's economic role.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cosmos Hub?
Cosmos Hub is the first blockchain in the Cosmos network, an ecosystem of independent chains designed to communicate with one another. ATOM is its native token, used for fees, staking, and governance.
How does Cosmos Hub work?
The chain uses delegated proof of stake with Byzantine fault tolerant consensus, where validators produce blocks and holders delegate ATOM to them for a share of rewards. The Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol lets Cosmos chains transfer tokens and messages without a trusted intermediary.
What is ATOM's maximum supply?
ATOM has no fixed maximum supply. Issuance is inflationary and adjusts based on how much of the supply is staked, with total supply currently around 525 million.
What is the Cosmos SDK?
The Cosmos SDK is a framework for building application-specific blockchains, used by many networks well beyond the Cosmos Hub itself. Chains built with it are sovereign and run their own validators.
Where can I buy Cosmos Hub?
ATOM is listed on most major centralized exchanges and on decentralized venues within the Cosmos ecosystem. You can compare supported platforms on our [exchanges page](/exchanges).
