Immutable

Immutable is a scaling platform for blockchain gaming and NFTs on Ethereum, and IMX is its native token. Immutable X, its original product, was the first zero-knowledge rollup dedicated to NFTs on Ethereum, addressing the problem that minting and trading NFTs directly on Ethereum was too expensive for game economies with frequent, low-value transactions.

How Immutable works

The platform batches transactions off chain and posts validity proofs to Ethereum, so trades and mints settle with Ethereum-level security at a fraction of the cost and with no gas fee charged to the end user for many operations. The technology was originally built on StarkWare's proving system. Immutable has since extended into a broader stack, including a chain built for games and tooling that lets studios integrate blockchain features without their players needing to understand wallets or gas.

IMX has a maximum supply of 2 billion tokens, all issued as total supply, with roughly 879 million in circulation. The token is used for staking, for paying protocol fees on marketplace activity, and for governance.

Role in the ecosystem

Blockchain gaming has been one of the most heavily funded and least commercially proven categories in crypto, with many titles failing to attract players beyond those seeking token rewards. Immutable's position is as infrastructure rather than as a game developer, so its exposure is to the aggregate activity of studios building on it. It has attracted a substantial number of game partnerships and is one of the main platforms in the category alongside Ronin and other gaming-focused chains.
