Ondo

Ondo (ONDO) is the governance token of the Ondo ecosystem, one of the leading projects in tokenized real-world assets (RWA). Ondo focuses on bringing institutional-grade financial products — most notably tokenized US Treasuries and yield-bearing dollar instruments — onto public blockchains, with the stated mission of democratizing access to institutional finance.

Origin and structure

The Ondo Foundation was founded in 2022 as an independently governed, nonprofit Cayman Islands Foundation Company with no beneficial owners. The Foundation assisted in launching the Ondo DAO, which deployed and governs Flux Finance, the first lending protocol supporting tokenized securities as collateral. Separately, Ondo Finance develops tokenized products such as USDY (Ondo US Dollar Yield) and tokenized Treasury exposure, which have become among the largest RWA products on-chain.

Token and governance

ONDO has a maximum supply of 10 billion tokens, with roughly 4.9 billion in circulation. It is a governance token rather than the native coin of a blockchain: it lives primarily on Ethereum and does not have its own consensus mechanism. ONDO holders are entrusted with shaping the direction of the Ondo DAO, including specific rights pertaining to Flux Finance. The token was distributed in part through a CoinList sale before becoming freely tradable in January 2024.

Role in the ecosystem

Ondo sits at the center of the RWA narrative in crypto: the idea that bonds, Treasuries, and other traditional instruments can be issued and settled on public blockchains with greater efficiency and accessibility. Its products are integrated across many chains and are used by both crypto-native funds and institutions seeking on-chain dollar yield. As tokenized Treasuries have grown into a multi-billion-dollar category, Ondo has become one of the reference names in the sector, and the ONDO token serves as the governance layer coordinating that ecosystem.
