About Synthetix
Synthetix is one of the longest-running DeFi protocols, launched in 2017 under the name Havven before rebranding in 2018. It originally allowed users to mint synthetic assets tracking the price of currencies, commodities, and equities, and it has since reoriented around decentralized perpetual futures trading on Ethereum.
How Synthetix works
In its current form, Synthetix operates a perpetual futures protocol using a hybrid design: order matching happens off chain on a high-performance central limit order book, while settlement occurs on Ethereum. This combination is intended to give traders the latency and depth they expect from centralized venues while keeping custody and finality on chain, and it reduces exposure to front-running compared with fully on-chain order flow.
Liquidity is supplied through the Synthetix Liquidity Pool, into which participants deposit collateral that backs trading activity. SNX is the protocol's token, historically staked as collateral to back synthetic assets, with stakers earning fees generated by trading and taking on the corresponding risk. There is no fixed maximum supply published in the available data; total supply is approximately 581 million SNX with nearly all of it in circulation.
Role in the ecosystem
Synthetix has been a source of DeFi design ideas that other protocols adopted, including the pooled counterparty model where all traders trade against a shared collateral pool rather than against individual counterparties. It has gone through several major architectural revisions and has deployed across Ethereum Layer 2 networks at different points. It remains one of the reference implementations of on-chain derivatives. Its long operating history through multiple market cycles gives it an unusually visible record of how its collateral and incentive mechanisms behave under stress.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Synthetix?
Synthetix is a decentralized derivatives protocol on Ethereum, launched in 2017. It originally issued synthetic assets tracking real-world prices and now focuses on perpetual futures trading.
How does Synthetix work?
It uses a hybrid design where orders are matched off chain on a high-performance order book and settled on Ethereum, giving low latency while keeping custody on chain. Liquidity comes from a shared pool that participants deposit collateral into.
What is SNX's maximum supply?
No fixed hard cap is published in the available data. Total supply is approximately 581 million SNX, with nearly all of it in circulation.
What are synthetic assets?
They are on-chain instruments whose value tracks an external reference price, such as a currency or commodity, without holding the underlying asset itself.
Where can I buy Synthetix?
SNX is listed on most major centralized exchanges and on decentralized exchanges. You can compare supported platforms on our [exchanges page](/exchanges).
