About Theta Network
Theta Network is a blockchain built for decentralized video delivery and, more recently, distributed computing for artificial intelligence workloads. It launched in 2018 with an original focus on reducing the cost of video streaming by having viewers relay content to one another rather than pulling everything from centralized servers.
How Theta works
The project describes itself as a dual network. The Theta Edge Network consists of participant-operated nodes that contribute bandwidth and GPU compute for video delivery, rendering, and AI tasks. The Theta Blockchain provides payments, rewards, and smart contract functionality on top of that. Two tokens are used: THETA, which is staked by validator and guardian nodes to secure the chain and participate in governance, and TFUEL, the operational token used to pay for relaying and compute work.
THETA has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, and the entire supply is issued and in circulation. This fixed, fully distributed supply means new THETA is not created; the network's ongoing incentives are paid in TFUEL instead.
Role in the ecosystem
Theta has pursued partnerships with media companies and has historically counted figures from Google and Samsung among its advisors. Its edge network model addresses a genuine cost problem in video distribution, where bandwidth from content delivery networks is a major expense. The extension into GPU compute placed the project within the wider DePIN and AI infrastructure categories, where it competes with other networks aggregating distributed hardware. The separation of a fixed governance token from an inflationary work token is a design used by several networks, because it lets ongoing incentives be paid without diluting the asset that secures the chain. It also means anyone assessing the network's economics needs to look at TFUEL issuance rather than THETA supply alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Theta Network?
Theta Network is a blockchain for decentralized video delivery and distributed GPU computing. It pairs an edge network of participant-operated nodes with a blockchain that handles payments, rewards, and smart contracts.
How does Theta Network work?
Edge nodes contribute bandwidth and GPU capacity for video relaying, rendering, and AI tasks, while the blockchain settles payments and rewards. THETA is staked by validator and guardian nodes for security and governance, and TFUEL pays for operational work.
What is THETA's maximum supply?
THETA has a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, and the entire supply is already issued and in circulation.
What is the difference between THETA and TFUEL?
THETA is the staking and governance token that secures the network, while TFUEL is the operational token used to pay for relaying bandwidth and compute work.
Where can I buy Theta Network?
THETA is listed on many major centralized exchanges. You can compare supported platforms on our [exchanges page](/exchanges).
