About TRON
TRON is a Layer 1 smart contract blockchain positioned as a high-throughput settlement layer for stablecoins and everyday digital transactions. Founded by Justin Sun, the network launched in 2017 — initially as a token on Ethereum before migrating to its own mainnet in 2018 — and is today governed as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) in which the community manages the protocol.
How TRON works
TRON uses Delegated Proof of Stake consensus: TRX holders vote for 27 "Super Representatives" who take turns producing blocks and maintaining the ledger. This structure is built for scalability and fast finality. A distinctive feature is its resource model, in which staked TRX grants users bandwidth and energy that can cover transaction costs, allowing high volumes without traditional fee spikes. The network is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so developers can port Ethereum-style smart contracts with little modification. TRX has no fixed maximum supply, with roughly 94.9 billion tokens circulating.
Role in the ecosystem
TRON's most prominent role is as one of the largest settlement networks for the stablecoin Tether (USDT): a very large share of USDT transfers occur on TRON because of its low fees and fast confirmation, particularly for remittances and exchange transfers. Beyond stablecoin settlement, the ecosystem includes DeFi services such as the lending platform JustLend DAO and decentralized storage via the BitTorrent File System (BTFS). TRX itself is used for transaction fees, staking, resource allocation, and governance voting across this ecosystem.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is TRON?
TRON is a Layer 1 smart contract blockchain founded by Justin Sun in 2017, designed for high-throughput, low-cost transactions. It is best known as a major settlement network for stablecoins, particularly Tether (USDT), and is governed by its community as a DAO.
How does TRON work?
TRON uses Delegated Proof of Stake: TRX holders vote for 27 Super Representatives who produce blocks and maintain the ledger. Its bandwidth-and-energy resource model lets staked TRX cover transaction costs, and EVM compatibility allows Ethereum-style smart contracts to run on it.
What is TRX's maximum supply?
TRX has no fixed maximum supply. Roughly 94.9 billion tokens are currently in circulation.
What is TRX used for?
TRX pays transaction fees, can be staked to obtain network bandwidth and energy, and grants voting power in Super Representative elections and governance. It also underpins DeFi services in the TRON ecosystem, such as JustLend DAO.
