About Convex Finance
Convex Finance is a yield optimisation protocol built on top of Curve, the decentralized exchange specialising in stablecoin and pegged-asset swaps. Convex launched in 2021 and became one of the central pieces of the Curve ecosystem by simplifying the mechanics of Curve's reward boosting system.
How Convex works
Curve rewards liquidity providers with CRV tokens, and those rewards can be boosted if the provider also locks CRV for a long period as veCRV. Locking is inconvenient for most participants because it removes liquidity for years. Convex solves this by pooling CRV from many users, locking it collectively, and passing the resulting boost through to liquidity providers who deposit through Convex without locking anything themselves. Users who deposit CRV into Convex receive cvxCRV and share in trading fees and boosted rewards, while liquidity providers earn improved returns with no lock-up commitment.
CVX is the protocol's governance token, with a maximum supply of 100 million and roughly 93 million in circulation. Because Convex accumulated a large share of locked CRV, holders of CVX gained substantial influence over how Curve directs its emissions, which is why the protocol sits in the metagovernance category.
Role in the ecosystem
Convex was at the centre of what became known as the Curve wars, a period in which protocols competed to accumulate voting power over Curve's reward distribution in order to attract liquidity to their own pools. That dynamic made CVX valuable as a governance instrument, not just as a yield token, and it remains a well-known example of how governance rights over one protocol can become an asset in themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Convex Finance?
Convex Finance is a yield optimisation protocol built on top of Curve. It lets Curve liquidity providers earn boosted CRV rewards without having to lock CRV themselves.
How does Convex Finance work?
Convex pools CRV from users and locks it collectively to obtain a reward boost, then passes that boost to liquidity providers who deposit through the protocol. CRV depositors receive cvxCRV and share in trading fees and boosted rewards.
What is CVX's maximum supply?
CVX has a maximum supply of 100 million tokens. Approximately 93 million are currently in circulation.
What were the Curve wars?
They were a period of competition among DeFi protocols to accumulate voting power over Curve's reward emissions, in order to direct liquidity incentives toward their own pools. Convex was a central player because of the CRV it had locked.
Where can I buy Convex Finance?
CVX is listed on several centralized exchanges and on Ethereum decentralized exchanges. You can compare supported platforms on our [exchanges page](/exchanges).
