Grass

Grass is a decentralized network in the DePIN category, built around the idea of letting individuals contribute unused internet bandwidth in exchange for token rewards. It operates on Solana and is positioned within the artificial intelligence sector, since the bandwidth contributed by participants is used to gather publicly available web data that is then applied to AI training and research workloads.

How Grass works

Participants install a browser extension or application that routes a portion of web requests through their connection when the device is otherwise idle. This creates a geographically distributed pool of residential network endpoints. Rather than relying on a small number of centralized data centers, the network can retrieve public web content from many different locations. Contributors accrue rewards in the GRASS token according to their participation, and the network is designed so that the underlying user browsing data is not part of what is collected.

The GRASS token has a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion tokens, with roughly 655 million currently in circulation. The remainder is subject to scheduled distribution to contributors and ecosystem participants. The project counts Polychain Capital among its backers according to the categorisation data available for the asset.

Role in the ecosystem

Grass belongs to a broader group of decentralized physical infrastructure projects that try to coordinate hardware or connectivity owned by ordinary users into a service that would otherwise require large centralized capital expenditure. Its particular focus, web data acquisition for AI, connects it to the wider demand for training corpora. Because it distributes work across many consumer connections, it is often discussed alongside other DePIN networks that pay for compute, storage, or wireless coverage rather than bandwidth.
