Frequently asked questions
What is the Crypto Fear & Greed Index?
A single number from 0 to 100 that summarises market sentiment toward Bitcoin, published daily by Alternative.me. 0 means extreme fear and 100 means extreme greed; each day also gets a label such as Fear, Neutral or Greed.
How is the Fear & Greed Index calculated?
Alternative.me combines volatility (25%), market momentum and volume (25%), social media (15%), surveys (15%, currently paused), Bitcoin dominance (10%) and Google Trends data (10%). Volatility and momentum are compared with their 30- and 90-day averages.
Which cryptocurrency does the index cover?
Bitcoin only. Because Bitcoin leads the wider market, the reading is commonly used as a gauge for crypto sentiment overall.
How often is the index updated?
Once a day. This page re-checks the published value every hour.
How do traders use the Fear & Greed Index?
Mostly as a contrarian signal: prolonged extreme fear can mean selling is overdone, while extreme greed can mean the market is overheated. It describes mood, not direction, so it is best read alongside price action and news rather than as a buy or sell signal on its own.
What is the CoinArticle news mood?
The share of articles CoinArticle published in the last 7 days that its pipeline tagged bullish, neutral or bearish. It is a separate, news-based reading and is not part of the Alternative.me index.
