Domain NFT

A domain NFT is a blockchain-based name — such as alice.eth or alice.crypto — issued as a non-fungible token, so that owning the token means controlling the name. The name can point to a wallet address, a website, or profile data, and because it is an NFT it can be transferred or sold like any other token.

The best-known systems are ENS on Ethereum, with .eth names, and Unstoppable Domains, which sells names under endings like .crypto and .nft. For example, someone who owns crypto-cafe.eth can configure it so payments sent to that name arrive at their wallet, then later sell the name by transferring the NFT to a buyer.

A common misconception is that a domain NFT works like a normal internet domain; standard browsers and the DNS system do not resolve these names natively, so they mainly function inside crypto wallets and dApps, with regular websites requiring gateways or special browser support. Ownership models also differ between systems: ENS names require periodic renewal fees and expire if lapsed, while some providers sell names as one-time purchases. Speculation on short or brandable names is common, but the practical value is simpler — replacing long, error-prone addresses with names people can actually remember.
