HODL
HODL is crypto slang for holding onto your coins through price swings rather than selling — a deliberate misspelling of "hold" that became the community's most famous meme. It originated in a December 2013 post on the Bitcointalk forum titled "I AM HODLING," in which a user, admittedly drinking whiskey during a price crash, declared he was a bad trader and would simply keep his bitcoin rather than try to time the market. The typo stuck.
The term evolved into a genuine investment philosophy: because crypto prices are extremely volatile and most people time markets poorly, holding through downturns can beat panic-selling at the bottom. Long-term believers call themselves HODLers, and the word was later given a retroactive acronym, "Hold On for Dear Life." For example, someone who bought bitcoin in 2017, held through the roughly 80 percent crash of 2018, and kept holding through subsequent cycles was HODLing — accepting deep drawdowns rather than trading in and out.
A common misconception is that HODLing guarantees profit; it is simply a buy-and-hold strategy, and holding a failing asset all the way down is also HODLing. The term works best as a description of temperament rather than advice — a reminder that crypto markets punish emotional decisions. Related slang has grown around it, such as "diamond hands" for those who never sell under pressure, and HODL remains one of the few crypto memes recognized well outside the industry.
