Play-to-Earn
Play-to-earn (P2E) is a game model in which players earn crypto tokens or NFTs through gameplay and can sell them for real money. Instead of in-game gold that stays locked inside the game, rewards are blockchain assets tradable on open markets, turning play time into potential income.
The model peaked with Axie Infinity in 2021: players bred and battled NFT creatures to earn a token they could sell, and in countries like the Philippines some players earned more than local wages, with "scholarship" arrangements emerging where asset owners lent teams to players for a share of earnings. That boom also exposed the model's core weakness — earnings came largely from new players buying in, so when growth stalled, token prices and incomes collapsed.
A common misconception is that play-to-earn creates money from gameplay itself; every dollar earned by one player must come from another participant, whether a new entrant, a speculator, or the project treasury, so the economics resemble a market, not a salary. The industry has since drifted toward "play-and-earn" or ownership-focused designs, where the game aims to be worth playing on its own and tradable assets are a bonus rather than the main attraction. P2E remains the clearest cautionary tale about token incentives overwhelming product quality.
