About Bonk
Bonk is a dog-themed meme token on the Solana blockchain that launched on 25 December 2022. It appeared in the period following the collapse of FTX, when activity on Solana had fallen sharply, and was positioned by its creators as a community project intended to bring users and developers back to the network. It is generally credited as the first widely adopted dog-themed token native to Solana.
Launch and distribution
Bonk was created by an anonymous group of Solana developers and builders. Rather than holding a sale, the project distributed a large share of its total supply, reported at half of the original 100 trillion tokens, through an airdrop to Solana participants including NFT holders, developers, and artists. This wide initial distribution was a deliberate part of its framing as a token for the community rather than for insiders.
BONK is an SPL token on Solana and does not have its own consensus mechanism; it inherits the security and settlement of the Solana network. It has also been bridged to other chains, and the categorisation data lists deployments associated with Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, and Aptos ecosystems. The maximum supply is approximately 88 trillion BONK, with essentially the entire supply in circulation after repeated token burns reduced the figure from the original 100 trillion.
Role in the ecosystem
Bonk functions primarily as a cultural and speculative asset rather than as infrastructure. It has been integrated as a tradeable or tipping asset across a number of Solana applications, wallets, and games, and it is frequently referenced as an example of how meme assets can drive retail attention and on-chain activity to a network. As with all meme tokens, its value is driven by community interest rather than by cash flows or protocol revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Bonk?
Bonk is a dog-themed meme token launched on the Solana blockchain in December 2022. It was distributed largely through a community airdrop and is often described as Solana's first widely adopted dog coin.
How does Bonk work?
BONK is an SPL token that runs on Solana, so it relies on Solana's proof of stake consensus rather than having its own blockchain. Bridged versions also exist on several other networks, and periodic burns have reduced the total supply over time.
What is BONK's maximum supply?
BONK has a maximum supply of roughly 88 trillion tokens, down from an original 100 trillion following token burns. Essentially all of that supply is in circulation.
Why was Bonk created?
It was launched in late 2022 as a community-focused project intended to renew activity and interest in the Solana ecosystem after a difficult period for the network.
Where can I buy Bonk?
BONK is available on many centralized exchanges and on Solana decentralized exchanges. You can compare supported platforms on our [exchanges page](/exchanges).
