About Sei
Sei is a Layer 1 blockchain focused on performance for trading and financial applications. It began as a Cosmos SDK chain with a built-in order matching engine and later shifted to a parallelized EVM design, giving it full Ethereum compatibility while keeping the throughput characteristics it was built for.
The parallelization is the central technical claim. Most EVM chains execute transactions one after another, which caps throughput regardless of available hardware. Sei executes independent transactions simultaneously and only serializes those that touch the same state, which recovers most of the benefit of parallel hardware for the common case where transactions are unrelated.
Design details
The chain also optimizes ordering and consensus for trading workloads, including features intended to reduce the advantage of transaction ordering manipulation. Its stated roadmap includes a further upgrade aimed at substantially increasing EVM throughput by optimizing execution, consensus, and storage together rather than one layer at a time.
Because it is EVM compatible, applications and tooling from Ethereum can be used with little modification, which lowers the cost for teams considering deployment.
Supply
SEI has no listed hard maximum supply. Total supply currently sits at 10 billion tokens with roughly 6.73 billion circulating, meaning a meaningful portion remains subject to release schedules. The token is used to pay transaction fees, for staking to secure the network under proof of stake, and in governance.
Sei competes in a crowded segment of high-performance Layer 1 chains, several of which make similar throughput claims. Measured on-chain activity and the number of applications with real users are more informative than stated transaction capacity, which is usually quoted under ideal conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sei?
Sei is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain focused on trading and financial applications, using a parallelized EVM design. It offers full Ethereum compatibility while executing independent transactions simultaneously.
How does Sei work?
The chain runs transactions in parallel and only serializes those that touch the same state, which raises throughput without breaking Ethereum compatibility. It uses proof-of-stake consensus, with SEI paying transaction fees and securing the network through staking.
What is SEI's maximum supply?
SEI has no listed hard maximum supply. Total supply is currently 10 billion tokens with roughly 6.73 billion circulating.
What does parallelized EVM mean?
It means the chain can execute multiple Ethereum-compatible transactions at the same time rather than strictly one after another, serializing only those that conflict over the same state.
Where can I buy Sei?
SEI is listed on many centralized exchanges and trades on decentralized venues. You can compare supported platforms on our [exchanges page](/exchanges).
