Virtuals Protocol

Virtuals Protocol is a launchpad for AI agents. It lets people create, tokenize, and monetize autonomous agents for gaming, entertainment, and virtual environments without needing to build the underlying infrastructure themselves. The protocol launched in 2024 and became one of the more prominent projects in the AI agent category.

Each agent created on the platform gets its own token. VIRTUAL serves as the base liquidity pair for all of those tokens and as the transactional currency across the ecosystem, so activity in any individual agent token flows through VIRTUAL.

The bonding curve model

New agents are created for a fee of 100 VIRTUAL and begin trading against a bonding curve, where the token price follows a formula as units are bought and sold. Once an agent's token accumulates enough purchases, its liquidity graduates to a conventional pool. This is the same mechanism used by general-purpose token launchpads, applied to agents rather than to memes.

The protocol initially launched on Base and has since expanded to Ethereum mainnet, Solana, and Ronin.

Supply and context

VIRTUAL has a maximum supply of one billion tokens, all issued as total supply, with roughly 658 million circulating.

The AI agent sector saw rapid growth and equally rapid contraction, and much of the activity on agent launchpads has been speculative rather than driven by agents performing useful work. The distinction worth drawing is between the launchpad's mechanics, which function as designed, and the question of whether the agents launched through it deliver lasting value. Anyone evaluating VIRTUAL should look at current platform activity rather than at peak-period figures.
