Worldcoin

Worldcoin is a project built around World ID, a system for proving that an online account belongs to a unique human being. The idea is that as automated agents become more capable, services will need a way to distinguish real people from bots without demanding identity documents, and World ID is designed to provide that signal while revealing as little as possible about the person behind it.

Verification is performed using a device called the Orb, which captures an iris image and derives a cryptographic identifier from it. The system uses zero-knowledge proofs so that a person can later prove they hold a valid, unique World ID without linking their activity back to the original enrollment. The approach has drawn scrutiny from privacy regulators in several jurisdictions, and the project has adjusted its data handling in response.

The token and the network

WLD is the network's token, with a maximum supply of 10 billion. A portion is distributed to verified users as a grant, and the remainder is allocated to the development organization and early backers under vesting schedules, so circulating supply has increased over time and remains well below total supply.

The project originally issued WLD on Optimism and later launched World Chain, a dedicated network in the Optimism Superchain family that gives verified humans priority access to blockspace. The World App wallet serves as the main consumer entry point.

Role in the ecosystem

Worldcoin sits at the intersection of decentralized identity and payments. Its stated aim is that proof of personhood becomes reusable infrastructure that other applications can integrate for airdrops, social platforms, and public programs, reducing the effectiveness of bot and sybil attacks. Whether that adoption materializes at scale is still an open question, and the biometric enrollment model remains the project's most debated element.
